Since this is my fic-centric, Tom-Voldemort focused webspace, I thought I'd write a wee bit about my, er, fascination with Mr. Riddle.
See, I can't remember when I first started being so interested. I am thinking it
had to be after CoS came out and he was played in such a tall, dark, and handsome way by Christian Coulson. It was also about when I worked out that Minerva and he had to have been at Hogwarts at the same time.
In December 2002, I was driving across the great state of OK on my way to family for Christmas, and the plot for
Strange and Wondrous, my loooong (31,419 word) Tom/Minerva story was born.
I think what attracted me most in those giddy pre-HBP days was the wondering about Tom. What was his childhood like in that orphanage? Did he hope for a mother and father and was denied? What
could have been, and could anything have changed his course as a young man?
In July of 2004, I saw a notice for a pan-fandom RPG on LJ called Milliways on my one of my Good Omens comms. There would be a Crowley and an Aziraphale (and I had just begun writing my GO fic,
The Greatest of These), so I was intrigued. I signed up to watch and then was asked by a mod to jump on in! I thought of a character I liked and had written before.
Hermione was already taken, but Tom Riddle? Well, I'd just written 30,000+ words about him (I finished the story finally in January 2004)!Plus, I thought he and Crowley might get on really well, in a lovely villainous (and maybe even a slashy!)way. So I apped him, with the intent on dabbling a bit with some evil plots and the like. But then Tom met Door from Neverwhere, and, well, I got to work on a redemption arc, instead. I've enjoyed this so much, even though when HPB came out, I spent most of it going... WTF??? WAH! I WAS SO WRONG!
Turns out my Tom was the soul from a broken Horcrux incarnate and given a second chance, so it all worked out fine. And he gets on with Crowley right well indeed!
But anyway, canon Tom, even with his cliched evil-from-birth background, still fascinates me. I am not quite able to write a true sociopath/psychopath, but I try my best, and I still always enjoy exploring the "what if" for our Mr. Riddle.
